Scope and Contents

Photographs in the collection depict various aspects of the lumber industry including forest views, the felling of trees, loggers in action, oxen pulling logs, stacks of wood beams and the transportation of lumber. The photographs themselves are undated but believed to be taken during the 1940s and 1950s.

Biographical / Historical

Kenneth S. Brown first moved to Seattle in 1923. A July 23, 1969 Seattle Times article discussing his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife Ruth Brown states that he worked at the Long-Bell Lumber Company, the Stone & Webster Engineering Corp, the Bureau of Reclamation and the Washington Toll Bridge Authority. Brown is first listed as photographer in the 1940 Seattle City directory. The same year he produced a booklet distributed by the West Coast Lumbermen’s Association which showed views of the lumber industry. Brown did freelance work for the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company in the 1930s and 1940s and was a photographer for the American Forest Product Industries in the 1950s. Brown passed away in January 1972.
